Lector or Reader

A Lector or Reader is any member of the congregation selected to proclaim the Scripture Readings (other than the Gospel). Readings from Scripture are integral to that part of the Mass known as the ‘Liturgy of the Word.’

The Lector is responsible for effectively conveying the words of Scripture to members of the congregation. Clearly, this requires preparation, reflection, rehearsal and presentation. It also includes using aspects of public speaking that assist parish members to hear and to better understand the Sacred Readings.

Commentator

The role of the Commentator is relatively new to the Church and the Liturgy, but nevertheless is an important ministry. The Commentator is responsible for welcoming the congregation and visitors to the mass, and later reading the Prayers of the Faithful.  

The role of the Commentator requires preparation, reflection, rehearsal (correct pronunciation, etc) and presentation. It is important for the Commentator to speak clearly, slowly and in a solemn and dignified way and to not rush.

The roles of Reader and Commentator are combined and read by one person at most weekend masses.
