The Liturgy Committee is a dedicated group of parishioners who work together with the parish priest and the rest of the parish staff to ensure that our masses are prayerful, meaningful, and reflective of the rich traditions of the Church.

What Does the Liturgy Committee Do?

The committee’s primary purpose is to help plan, prepare, and facilitate our liturgical celebrations. This involves a variety of tasks, all aimed at fostering a deep sense of prayer and reverence during Mass and other liturgies. Here's a look at some of the key responsibilities of the committee:

1. Planning Liturgical Celebrations

The committee is involved in planning the structure and flow of our liturgical services. This includes:

• Selecting appropriate readings from Scripture, as well as the psalms, prayers, and hymns for each Mass or celebration.
• Coordinating the liturgical seasons (Advent, Lent, Easter, etc.), ensuring that each season is appropriately reflected in our worship.
• Choosing the right feast days and special celebrations, such as the Solemnity of the Assumption or the Feast of St. Joseph, so that they are given proper emphasis in our liturgical calendar.

2. Coordinating Liturgical Ministries

There are many people who serve in different capacities during our liturgies—lectors, altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, music ministers, and more. The committee works closely with these ministry leaders to:

• Schedule and train ministers, ensuring that everyone is prepared and confident in their roles.
• Ensure a smooth flow of roles during Mass, including coordinating the procession, offertory, and communion.
• Support volunteers and new people who want to become involved in liturgical ministry, helping them discern where they can best serve.

3. Selecting Music and Hymns

Music is such an important part of our worship, and the committee works closely with our music director to:

• Choose hymns and liturgical music that align with the themes of the Mass or liturgical season.
• Encourage participation by the congregation in singing and offering suggestions for new songs or arrangements that enhance the worship experience.
• Ensure that music ministers (choir, musicians, cantors) are properly supported and equipped to lead us in song.

4. Fostering a Spirit of Prayerful Worship

The liturgy committee's work isn’t just about logistics—it’s also about cultivating an atmosphere where we can all encounter God in prayer. This includes:

• Creating a reverent and welcoming environment in the church, by arranging candles, flowers, and other items that reflect the sacredness of the liturgy.
• Helping to prepare the altar, including the arrangement of the gifts, linens, and vessels, so that everything is set for the celebration of the Eucharist.
• Planning and preparing special liturgies for important occasions, such as baptisms, weddings, funerals, and other sacramental celebrations, so that they are meaningful and prayerful.

5. Educating and Encouraging Participation

The Liturgy Committee also has a role in helping the parish grow in understanding and participation in the liturgy. This might include:

• Offering formation and education opportunities for the parish, such as workshops on the liturgy, the meaning of the sacraments, or the importance of the Mass.
• Encouraging active participation—not just in the music, but also through thoughtful responses, participation in the prayers, and understanding the richness of our liturgical rites.
• Helping the parish understand the liturgical seasons—teaching about the significance of Advent, Lent, Easter, and other times in the liturgical year.

6. Evaluating and Improving the Liturgy

Finally, the Liturgy Committee takes time to reflect on our liturgical celebrations and make suggestions for improvement. This might involve:

• Seeking feedback from the parish about how we can improve the liturgical experience.
• Making adjustments as needed, such as introducing new prayers, revising certain elements of the liturgy, or addressing any challenges or concerns that arise.

The Liturgy Committee is truly a “behind the scenes” group, but their work is at the heart of our community's worship. Through their efforts, they help create a space where we can all come together to pray, give thanks, and receive the grace that God wants to offer us through the liturgy.
