Altar Society - OLHC
Altar Society at Our Lady Help of Christians, Eltham
In 1987, having lost her husband unexpectedly, Angelina Casonato began bringing flowers from her garden every Saturday to Our Lady’s Church. She did this for almost 30 years, until she died in 2016 at the age of almost 91.
She loved growing flowers for the Parish community. It was a labour of love for her. Her family have continued this tradition, every Saturday, in her memory.
The garden outside the Church is named in her honour.
Duties of being an Altar Society member requires just half to one hour per week on a Saturday.
It requires the person, or persons, to arrange one or two vases of flowers behind the altar Flowers are provided early every Saturday morning in the room near the altar. It is voluntary and very rewarding, and sometimes Fr Michael even provides a coffee!
Flowers are important in Church as they remind us of God’s creation and also reminds us of our loved ones.
