SACRED HEART SOCIAL JUSTICE GROUP SANDRINGHAM
We hold monthly meetings 7:30 to 8:30pm in the church foyer from February to November then a dinner in December
ALL ARE WELCOME
HISTORY: A meeting was held in 2000 to discuss Justice issues, Fr Frank organized a number of speakers to give various view-points hence we began a Social Justice group.
We were focused on Indigenous issues and after meeting a wonderful nun, Sr Tess Ward, our focus shifted to Timor Leste: we could do more practical work there. We, Sacred Heart Parish, have been involved in Timor Leste and the village of Remexio since 2002. Thank goodness a mountain village! to build com-munity relationships!
We began with refurbishment of the Church/Hall and new residence, then we con-tributed to accommodation on the parish site for parishioners & visitors.
We have renovated the primary school & kindergarten & added a library to the senior High school.
We have put in clean drinking water & filters to the primary school, maternity clinic, Kinder and Junior High school.
Also repaired and set up water from the source to the community.
Our primary school donated desks & chairs for a new kindergar-ten.
We began scholarships for senior high school students years 10, 11 & 12 and then onto University. Which has produced: A physics teacher, English teacher, primary teacher, Computer technician, Nurse, Bio medical student, Civil Engineer.
We support Volunteer teachers through Mary MacKillop Today; we began with 9 now only 3. Some have been seconded to government positions!
We give to MMT $3600 each year for this project.
Laptops were sourced in 2016 for the senior high school.
Kilbreda College made visits at end of year 12.
Repairs to, and provide power points to the parish church, house and senior high school.
Pat, a parishioner, trained interested young men to work with electricity, safely!
Visits to Sandringham were from Fr’s David, Johnny and Julio.
Over these 22 years our numbers & members have changed, we have a small working group now so our focus is limited. Anyone/ EVERYONE is invited to join our work!
