Our commitment to safeguarding

St Macartan’s Catholic Parish is committed to the safety, wellbeing and dignity of children and young people. We have zero tolerance for child abuse, harm, racism or discrimination, and work to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where children are heard, respected and safe.

The parish has adopted the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne’s Safeguarding and Wellbeing of Children and Young People Policy and Safeguarding Children and Young People Code of Conduct. These documents guide our parish activities and set expectations for clergy, staff, volunteers and contractors.

Volunteers are required to undergo screening appropriate to their role in accordance with Archdiocesan safeguarding requirements, including a current, valid Working with Children Check and a Police Check where required.

All volunteers must read, understand and sign the safeguarding Code of Conduct when commencing their role, and renew their declaration every three years. Volunteers must also complete Archdiocesan safeguarding training every three years, or more frequently if directed. Clergy and employees are required to complete training and renew their Code of Conduct declaration annually.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage children, parents, carers and parishioners to raise any concern about a child’s safety or wellbeing with the Parish Safeguarding Officer or the Archdiocesan Safeguarding Unit. Concerns will be taken seriously and responded to promptly, with the child’s safety and wellbeing as the priority.
