St Mary MacKillop was born in Fitzroy in 1843 and died in North Sydney in 1909.  St Mary was a great light of hope for our early Australian people.  St Mary opened orphanages, schools and homes for single women.  Mary stood with prisoners, sat with the poor and lived her life from the value of the Gospels.  Mary like St Brigid and St Louis was a person of justice and hope.  

The road to Sainthood for Mary was commenced in 1925 by Mother Laurence, the Mother Superior of the Sisters of Joseph. It took until 1973 for the initial phase of investigations to be completed. “Mary MacKillop's "heroic virtue" was declared in 1992. That same year, the church endorsed the belief that  Veronica Hopson, apparently dying of leukaemia in 1961, was cured by praying for Mary MacKillop's intercession; Mary MacKillop was beatified on 19 January 1995 by Pope John Paul II.

On 19 December 2009, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued a papal decree formally recognising a second miracle, the complete and permanent cure of Kathleen Evans of inoperable lung and secondary brain cancer in the 1990s.”
