Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is for those seeking to understand the Catholic faith and also experience God’s saving grace and love by entering into a personal relationship with Jesus through prayer, reflecting on Sacred Scripture, Tradition, Sacraments and the teachings of the Church. 

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is for those who would like to become Catholic or for Catholics wanting to renew their understanding of the Sacraments and Church teaching.

The RCIA Journey:

“Inquiry” is the first phase of the R.C.I.A. Here the ‘inquirer’ seeks help to respond to God’s call.

“Catechumenate” is the second phase. It is the process by which an unbaptized person comes to Christian faith.

“Purification and Enlightenment” is the third phase. Through the period of the catechumenate with the Church, the individual discerns readiness to profess the faith and receive the Sacraments of Initiation. This culminates in the celebration of sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. 

The fourth stage of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is called “mystagogy,” from the Greek words meaning “to lead through the mysteries.”

The Period of Mystagogy is from Easter to Pentecost Sunday for the newly baptised and for the whole church “by proceeding from the visible to the invisible, from the sign to the thing signified, from the ‘sacraments’ to the ‘mysteries.’ (CCC 1075) Spiritual growth is an ongoing and lifelong.

This period focuses on the experience of the Easter Vigil, the meaning of the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist - and living out the faith through Christian service (mission).

Ideally, the newly baptised gather monthly for a year, to be supported by the community and continue their growth in faith.
