From its beginnings, St Patrick’s has been built on faith and generosity. Migrant

communities raised its walls and enriched it through their presence. Today, that same foundation calls us forward. Light into the City renews the Cathedral as a mother church for Melbourne’s many cultures, a place where diverse communities and faiths converge in mutual respect and shared spirituality. Here, the light of Christ shines through every language, tradition and generation.

About the renewal

Light into the City is a five to ten-year vision that involves the careful and necessary restoration of St Patrick’s Cathedral and heritage buildings, and the renewal of the Cathedral precinct. It will strengthen the Church’s mission to serve with mercy, hope and joy, ensuring this sacred site continues to welcome, gather and inspire generations to come.

The Archbishop invites Catholics and the wider community to be part of Light into the City; a shared investment in faith, heritage and the future of the city.

Light into the City is a multi-year vision delivered in stages.

Stage one, beginning this year, is the most urgent. It includes the necessary restoration of the Cathedral, construction of a new adjacent assembly building, and landscaping to create a more accessible and welcoming precinct.

Stage two will restore and repurpose the Presbytery and Cardinal Knox Centre, with the intent to provide new culture, arts and social outreach facilities for wider community benefit. The overall Light into the City vision contemplates a further, final stage involving the construction of new facilities for mission agencies. This stage is still in development and is not part of the Light into the City fundraising campaign.

St Kevin’s Parish would like to support this initiative through a collection that will be taken up on 7th June at the St Kevin’s Feast Day celebration. We will have more planned collections towards this initiative that will be held over the next eighteen months. The total amount of funds raised will be sent to the Archdiocese in December 2027.
