BELGRAVE PARISH
Welcome to the Belgrave Parish Communities
St. Thomas More’s Parish encompasses four distinct and vibrant Mass centers nestled throughout the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. Each center has its own unique history, character, and deep roots within the local hills community.
We invite you to worship, connect, and grow with us at any of our five locations:
Sacred Heart, Gembrook
The Sacred Heart Church in Gembrook stands as the oldest church in the parish, celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2003 after being opened in 1924. Over the decades, it has maintained a vibrant and dedicated "hands-on" community focused on local maintenance and close family ties.
St. Paul’s, Monbulk
St. Paul’s was originally opened in 1911, but after a fire destroyed the early wooden structure, the larger and present church building was erected in 1972. Historically supported by a large and generous Dutch immigrant community of local flower growers, the centre has a rich tradition of tight-knit parishioner support and warm hospitality. The community further expanded its presence with the opening of St. Paul's Primary School at the beginning of the 1984 school year.
St. Joseph’s, Emerald
St. Joseph's was first built in 1914 as a modest wooden church on Ann Street. To accommodate a growing community, a new, larger church was erected at a different location in September 1982. The centre is warmly regarded by its parishioners for its deep sense of community spirit.
St. Thomas More’s, Belgrave
- Originally built by voluntary labor in 1920 as the Austral Hall, the building was dedicated as St. Thomas More's Church in 1938 before Belgrave officially became a separate, independent parish in 1959. To support a rapidly growing population, the current, larger church building was opened in 1979. Over the years, the Belgrave centre has served as a central hub for the wider parish, hosting key administrative services, community programs, and St. Thomas More's Primary School.
